Martin Marietta CEO J. Donald Rauth, 87 Saturday, January 7, 2006; Page B06 J. Donald Rauth, 87, chief executive of Martin Marietta Corp. from 1973 until his retirement in 1983, died Dec. 28 at Washington Hospital Center after a heart attack. He lived in Chevy Chase and Vero Beach, Fla. Mr. Rauth, who spent his entire 43-year career with Martin Marietta and its predecessors, led the company when it fended off a hostile takeover bid by the Bendix Corp. in 1982. The episode is taught in many college business courses about corporate takeovers. Under his leadership, the Bethesda-based Martin Marietta, an aerospace and technology conglomerate, was among the area's largest private employers. The company is now known as Lockheed Martin. Mr. Rauth joined a forerunner of Martin Marietta, the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Middle River, Md., in 1940 as an engineer. He held a patent on the electrical system for the Gorgon IV, an experimental missile developed in 1946. As head of nuclear development, he oversaw the design, manufacture and installation of the world's first portable nuclear power system, which in 1961 became the primary power supply for the Navy-operated scientific exploration station at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The same year, under Mr. Rauth's direction, Martin Marietta built the first nuclear power device for a spacecraft, which was launched aboard a Navy navigational satellite. John Donald Rauth was born in Pitman, N.J., and graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia in 1940. An endowed chair at the university's business management school was later established in his name. He enjoyed outdoor activities and golf and was a member of the Chevy Chase Club and the Burning Tree Club in Bethesda. He served on corporate and private boards, including those of Brunswick Corp., Black & Decker, Eaton Corp. and American Security Bank. He was also a member of the Conquistadores del Cielo, an aviation group; the Alfalfa Club; and the Knights of Malta. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Catherine Burns Rauth of Chevy Chase; two children, Dr. John Donald Rauth Jr. and Kathryn Rauth Rizik, both of Washington; a sister; and three grandchildren. |
